Classical electrodynamics
Dimiter Trifonov
Preface (reduced translation)
This textbook is written on the base of lectures delivered by the author
to the students majoring Physics, and Physics and Mathematics in the
South West University "N. Rilski" and is oriented mainly as a textbook for
those students. It could be useful also to students of other specialities,
and to teachers (instructors) and researchers as a reference book.
The foundations of the classical theory of the electromagnetic
field are treated resorting to the variational least action principle
and the Poincaree-Einstein relativity principle (special relativity theory).
In the more detailed description of the field properties the more familiar
3-dimensional formulations are preferably used. Illustrative problems
are provided in each chapter along with the development of the subject.
At many places further reading texts are pointed out. In a 30 pages
Appendix the reader may find the basic notions and formulas of the
vector and tensor analysis, linear functionals and variational calculus.
All formulas in the main text are written in Gauss system. In the Appendix
a table of basic formulas in Gauss and in SI systems is provided.
The author thanks the referees prof. L.I. Pavlov and prof. H.D. Popov
and the assoc. prof. S. Donev for careful reading of the manuscript and
valuable remarks.
